Governor's Cup Judging Criteria
MARYLAND GOVERNORS CUP
The Maryland Governor's Cup is an annual beer competition open to all Maryland Breweries held every fall and judged by an independent panel of certified judges from around the region. Beers are judged based on the BJCP 50 point system.
To determine the overall Governor's Cup Best of Show winner, the highest scores in each category are judged in a final "taste-off" by a select panel of expert judges.
The categories are:
Gold/Blond Ale
Belgian Ale
Porter/Brown Ale
Stout
Pale Ale
Amber/Red Ale
India Pale Ale (IPA)
Wheat Beer
Specialty/Experimental Beer/Fruit Beer
Strong Ale/Barleywine
Gold Lager
Octoberfest/Marzen
The judging is scored on the AHA scoring system.
40 - 50 points - Gold Medal
35 - 40 points - Silver Medal
30 - 34 points - Bronze Medal
In 2012 there were a record 173 entries in 13 categories and 84 medals were awarded.
