Brewer's Association of Maryland (BAM) April 2012 (4/23/2012 7:28:30 PM)

Greetings from the Brewer's Association of Maryland!

April, 2012 we'll discuss:
  • Maryland unanimously passes legislation for establishment of Farm Breweries
  • Maryland Craft Beer Festival tickets now on sale
  • BAM announces new Executive Director, J.T. Smith
  • Maryland Beer featured on NPR's 'All Things Considered'

Maryland House and Senate VOTE UNANIMOUSLY to ESTABLISH FARM BREWERIES

The State of Maryland has unanimously passed legislation that will establish 'Farm Breweries' under a new beer manufacturing license (class 8).  Farm Breweries, by definition will feature home-grown barley, hops, and/or fruits in their beer, as well, be free to sell that beer for both on and off premise consumption.  We at BAM certainly look forward to enjoying a home-grown pint on the farm soon.  The legislation was endorsed and heavily supported by the Brewer's Association of Maryland through organizing support, gaining sponsorship, and testifying to committee.

BAM Executive Director, J.T. Smith offered his support to the Senate through testimony stating, 'beyond the direct support of craft beer in Maryland, this bill explicitly and unequivocally supports Maryland agricultural. This bill adds direct value to a farmerʼs land. Whether a farmer in the state chooses to brew beer or not, this bill creates an additional value to their land- in its natural state, helping to protect and support our farming community. '

The Governor will sign the bill in May authorizing by law the establishment of the 'Class 8' - Farm Brewery,' with brewery openings slated immediately after the enactment date of July 1, 2012.

Representatives from the newly established Farm Breweries will be on-hand at Maryland Craft Beer Festival on Sat, May 12th discussing their farms.  Brewer's Alley of Frederick will be sampling a beer brewed from locally grown and malted barley from Amber Fields Malting and Brewing Co., in Keymar, MD, one of the new Class 8 Farm Breweries.

BAM would like to thank these Maryland state representatives for their support of Maryland Craft Beer:
